The Breathing Room Project- Installation and Film Animation, 2007

There is a preoccupation with stillness, silence and contemplation – particularly within the performance installation work. This exterior perception co-exists with the more active idea of breathing – not just as a literal phenomenon but as the basis for existing. The ramifications therefore extend into notions of being, of a sense of self. How this has been articulated is through a paring down of elements to create a space for the viewer/participant to become aware of their physical presence. In the two installations both focussed on narratives within the space when perhaps there might now be an argument for thinking about the nature of the space itself and how it is approached. Lecturer, Chelsea College of Art & Design.
